Russell was born in Swansea.  He is a multi-award-winning writer and producer with awards and nominations from BAFTA, Emmy Primetime, British Academy Awards, SFX, RTS and the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain. 

His first scripts were for the West Glamorgan Youth Theatre, including an adaptation of David Copperfield, starring a 16-year-old Michael Sheen.  He started work for the BBC in Cardiff, then Manchester, where he created Queer As Folk in 1999.  His productions include The Second Coming, Bob & Rose, Casanova, Cucumber, Years and Years, A Very English Scandal, It’s A Sin, and since 2005, Doctor Who, made in Cardiff.
