Al Smith is a prolific writer for stage, radio and television.

Al Smith’s theatre credits include: Harrogate, Rare Earth Mettle (Royal Court Theatre); Diary of a Madman (Traverse Theatre / Gate Theatre); and Radio (Arcola / Audible).

Upcoming work includes a commission for a new play with the National Theatre.

He writes regularly for television and radio. His BBC Radio 4 series Life Lines has won an ARIA (Best Fiction, 2017); and the BBC Audio Drama Award (for Best Series in 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2025).

He has won the BFI Wellcome Trust Screenwriting Prize (2012), and for his play Harrogate he was nominated for the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright (2016).
